  East Gate
Butterfly Farm
City God Spirit Tree

Meinung is a farming village about 1 1/2 hours from Kaohsiung.  "Mei" means "beautiful" and "Nung" means "strong".  The Hakka people live in Meinung.  They first came to Taiwan almost 300 years ago.  The Hakka are strong and work very hard.  Rice, tobacco, beetle nut and bannanas grow on the farms.  About 300,000 pigs live there, too.  Pork is a very popular food, so we ate pig's feet for lunch.

Meinung is a beautiful place with fields, green trees and mountains.  Long ago, the people went to the river to wash their clothes in the Meinung River.   Near the River is East Gate, the old entrance to the village.  A  huge tree grows in the area.  It is decorated with red and yellow cloth and flowers to honor the spirit of the City God.

We also visited a special butterfly farm .  They fly all around and even sit in your hand!  Their colors are wonderful....just like a rainbow.  In Japanese, we say "cho cho" for butterfly.  Cho cho is the symbol of grace and fragile beauty.

We also went to the Meinung Culture Center and had a good time!  We made pottery cups and paper umbrellas.  These are famous crafts of Meinung.

We want to go back!

Hsitzu Bay
Kushan District, Kaohsiung City
Story:  Middle School-3rd Grade

Kaohsiung Harbor
The Old British Consulate

Kaohsiung is a harbor city, so Hsitzu Bay is a very famous place.  Fishing boats, oil tankers and container ships sail in and out of the harbor.  Big ships carry things for export and import.  For example:  Taiwan exports computer chips  (not potato chips!) and computer parts, eel, bannanas and plastic.  Taiwan imports a lot of clothing from China, Indonesia and Korea.

A beautiful mountain overlooks the harbor.   In Chinese the mountain's name is "Shou Shan".  It means "Long Life Mountain".  Sun Yat Sen University sits on the mountain.  We saw many students and teachers there.  If you look closely, you can see monkeys, too!  They live in the mountain forests.

We could not go swimming  because the water is too dangerous.  But, we could walk on the beach.  We visited the Old British Consulate nearby.  It is about 100 years old.

The People's Market
Lingya District, Kaohsiung City

Story:  Middle School-3rd Grade

In Taiwan, people sometimes buy their food at the Supermarket.  But usually, they go to the "wet" market everyday early in the morning.  The prices are good and the food is fresh.

One day, our Chinese teacher, Ms. Chang Su Jeng, took us to the People's Market.  We saw many interesting things like butchered pigs, chicken and  sheep, live fish, and fresh vegetables and fruit.    The fruit looked delicious, but the chicken hearts and pigs heads did not!

It was fun to talk to the market vendors.  We spoke Mandarin, not Japanese.  We asked many questions.  We learned that "black chicken" is the most expensive.  It is a special kind of chicken that lives in the mountains and its meat is black.  The Taiwanese people believe that black chicken is good for your health.  It's a kind of "Chinese medicine".  Jeff says, "Black Chicken tastes GOOD!"
